Board development

The effectiveness of a Board or top team is dependent on:

  • Composition (the mixture of experience and expertise around the table)
  • Structure (how it is organised)
  • Processes
  • Temporal orientation (i.e. past, present or future)
  • Quality of dialogue at and between meetings.

Effective Boards regularly review their effectiveness and plan how to improve performance both individually and collectively. They make time to reflect on how they perform key processes, such as decision-making and the management of risk and innovation. They ensure that the balance of attention between past, present and future is monitored frequently. They also monitor and manage the Board’s reputation with both internal and external stakeholders.
